The Penny House is a free, safe space for junior high and high school students to hang out with friends, play games, and grow into leaders. Created by teens, for teens.
The Penny House is a nonprofit that gives junior high and high school students a safe place to connect with their peers.
Our mission is to inspire confidence and leadership in students by giving them a place to flourish.
"Be the change in the world you wish to see."
On a cold December night, three friends sat in a hot tub in a small North Dakota town and talked about how there was not much to do, and even fewer places to do it. They wondered if teen boredom was part of why underage drinking was so common in rural North Dakota.
Two years of bringing people together and hard work.
The Penny House officially opened its doors to the youth of Harvey, with video games, table games, and space to just be with friends.
After three and a half years in Harvey, COVID-19 and the move to online school led us to close our doors.
We opened a temporary location in the Columbia Mall in Grand Forks, funded by a GF Mainstreet Initiative grant, and served the Grand Forks community until funding ran out in 2021.
We found a new home in an unused apartment above New Life on Main in Harvey. It still had bright pink and green shag carpet from another era! After four years of roadblocks and hard work by a small team, the space is fresh and ready for the youth of Harvey.
If you believe in a safe place for North Dakota teens, we would love to have you as a supporter.
